What Size Canvas Should You Hang Above a Sofa?
Share
Hanging a canvas above a sofa is the one piece of wall art most of us get wrong, and nearly always in the same direction: too small. A painting that looked enormous propped against the shop wall can shrink the moment it goes up behind three seats of upholstery. The good news is that the right size comes down to a couple of simple measurements, and once you know them you can shop with confidence.
Start with the two-thirds rule
Measure the width of your sofa from arm to arm. Your canvas, or your group of canvases, should span roughly two-thirds to three-quarters of that width. Any narrower and the art floats like an afterthought; any wider and it starts to overhang the sofa and the room feels top-heavy.
So a classic three-seater of about 180 cm wants art somewhere between 120 cm and 135 cm wide. A compact two-seater of 150 cm is happiest with something around 100 cm to 110 cm. If you are torn between two sizes, go for the larger one. In our experience nobody has ever regretted a bigger canvas above a sofa, but plenty of people have wished theirs were wider.
Get the height right too
Height is the second half of the puzzle, and it is where a lot of otherwise lovely rooms go astray. Above a sofa the usual “centre at eye level” advice does not quite apply, because you are looking at the painting while seated and the sofa itself anchors the wall. Instead, aim for a gap of about 15 cm to 25 cm between the top of the sofa back and the bottom edge of the frame. Close enough that the two read as one composition, far enough that nobody knocks their head on the corner when they sit down.
If you have a high ceiling and a low, modern sofa, you can nudge that gap up to around 30 cm, and a taller portrait-format canvas will help fill the vertical space. With a high-backed traditional sofa, keep the gap tight and choose a wide landscape format that stretches across rather than up.
A quick size guide by sofa width
Here is a table we use when customers message us for advice. The sizes in the right-hand column are the ones we paint most often, so you can match them straight to a canvas.
| Sofa width | Ideal art width | Good options |
|---|---|---|
| 130–150 cm (small two-seater) | 90–110 cm | One 100 × 50 cm landscape, or a 90 × 90 cm square |
| 160–180 cm (standard three-seater) | 110–135 cm | One 120 × 60 cm or 120 × 80 cm landscape |
| 190–220 cm (large three-seater) | 130–160 cm | One 120 × 60 cm with generous breathing space, or a pair of 60 × 90 cm portraits hung side by side |
| 230 cm and over (corner or four-seater) | 160–200 cm | Two or three matching canvases, or a bespoke width painted to your measurement |
A pair or a trio is often the smartest answer for a very long sofa. Hang them with a gap of 5 cm to 8 cm between each canvas, and treat the whole group as one piece when you apply the two-thirds rule.
Which format suits which room?
A wide 2:1 panoramic canvas is the natural partner for a sofa because it echoes the furniture’s own proportions. Something like Alpine Daisy Meadow, with its open sky and distant peaks, settles above a three-seater beautifully, and a sunlit scene such as Amalfi Lemon Coast does the same with a lot more colour.
A large square canvas, around 90 × 90 cm, makes a confident centrepiece if your sofa is on the smaller side or the ceiling is tall. An abstract piece like Storm in Pearl holds the wall on its own without needing anything either side. And if your living room leans calm and tonal, a soft, silvery landscape such as Silver Lake Mirror brings width without shouting.
Three mistakes to avoid
- Hanging too high. The gap between sofa and canvas is the first thing the eye reads. Keep it under 25 cm unless the ceiling demands otherwise.
- Centring on the wall instead of the sofa. If the sofa sits off-centre, centre the painting on the sofa. The wall edges rarely matter.
- Buying to fit a frame you already own. Start with the sofa measurement, then choose the art. A canvas can be painted to your size far more easily than a sofa can be swapped.
Measure once, then hang with confidence
Before you order, cut a sheet of newspaper or wrapping paper to the size you are considering and tape it to the wall above the sofa. Live with it for an evening. If it looks a touch small on paper, it will look smaller still once it is a painting, so size up.
Every canvas at Gallery 23 is hand-painted to order, and most of our designs come in four standard sizes with the choice of a rolled canvas or a slim float frame in black, antique gold, white, dark grey, oak or walnut.
